People Performance
What we do:
Managing Performance
Once it is clear what the organisation is trying to achieve the next stage is to make it clear what individuals are expected to achieve in order to help the organisation and identify whether they have the skills and knowledge to deliver it. We have developed a range of performance management processes including appraisals, personal development planning tools, individual and team review systems that enable line management to assess and measure the performance of their staff.
Where organisations have existing processes ICE will help you review whether they are fit for purpose and recommend changes if necessary. If such processes do not exist the ICE Team will apply the right performance management process for your organisation and help train line management to use it.
Sometimes managing performance may lead to the need to hold difficult conversations; again we can support managers to develop the skills to carry out such conversations through the delivery of training programmes or 1:1 coaching.
Leadership and Management
Leaders and managers are key to getting the best out of people. Our experience has found that the effectiveness of leaders and managers, particularly as managers of people, in many organisations is inconsistent; some are very good and many could be better. The ICE team will work with you to identify where there is scope for further development of your management and supervisory staff. We have a skills analysis process that we will use to work with you to identify what skills, knowledge and behaviours and leadership and management style you need now and in the future. Where organisational values exist we will ensure that the management approach is aligned with the values as well as the vision for the future.
We already have generic training programmes designed to address the commonly found leadership and management issues. However once the learning requirements of your managers and supervisory staff are identified we will work
with you to design bespoke programmes focused on meeting your specific needs. They would typically involve a mixture of relevant short courses or workshops that can be delivered in house, through coaching or mentoring and may involve identifying small projects which allow participants to learn and develop project management skills while addressing real issues in the workplace.
The content of our programmes can provide an appropriate blend of the following options:
- strategic thinking
- communications – developing the structures as well as the skills;
- getting the most from performance management processes;
- setting focused objectives
- teamworking – breaking down barriers
- how to motivate and inspire people
- how to involve and consult with your teams
- coaching and mentoring
- influencing skills including selling ideas upwards
- problem solving and decision making
- personal effectiveness and personal efficiency which would include how to delegate.
In addition to the wide range support programmes offered by the ICE team, we are now able to offer a range of personal development programmes including:
List of available programmes
- Turning good Managers into Great Leaders - programmes aimed at a wide range of commercial and public sector organisations these Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) accredited programmes have been designed to develop the leadership skills of today’s manager.
- Managing for Success – an ILM accredited Leadership and Management programme specifically designed for the Metals, Manufacturing and Engineering Sector;
- Innovation and Creativity – a range of programmes designed to benchmark and develop a culture of innovation where new thinking is encouraged and successfully implemented.
What is unique about the ICE is the approach that we will take - integrating the development of leaders and managers with the other activities and projects that we undertake with our clients, using all as an opportunity to learn and develop.
Leading and Managing Change
Our approach to Change Management is based on lots of practical experience of both what it is like to go through change as well as having successfully delivered transformational change in organisations.
We have a structured but flexible, tried and tested approach that will help you get buy in from those affected by the change.
A typical programme would include:
- agreeing the purpose identifying the compelling argument for the change;
- anticipating the barriers, the likely impact of change and the main risks to be managed
- developing a change strategy and implementation plan which includes a communication plan
- adopting an appropriate management approach to engage people in the change process
- developing the structures and systems to ensure the required change is sustained.
If required, we could deliver a City and Guilds Licentiate in Managing Change.
High Performance Working through People engagement
Following the publication in 2009 of two separate government reports on High Performance Working and People Engagement a lot of interest has been generated as they clearly show the business benefits of these approaches.
The ICE team have developed a programme which brings the findings of these reports together in order to help organisations build employee commitment in order to get the best out of their people. The reports collate previous research and describe the business case for engagement, how it will lead to high performance working, the various approaches taken by case study organisations and how they have benefited
A typical programme would include:
- What is employee engagement and how does it create high performance working;
- How to create a high performing organisation (or high performing teams);
- What leaders and managers need to do
- The positive side affects from having an engaged workforce.

Investors in People
Whilst Investors in People has been around for 20 years, it is still seen by many as a powerful tool for helping them develop their organisation and people as well as getting feedback from employees on how they think they are being led and managed on a periodic basis.
Much of what we deliver is automatically in line with the Investors in People Standard but where necessary it can brought exactly into line, if organisations would like to gain external recognition for what they have achieved.
More recently the Investors in People Framework has been extended to give organisations more stretch through a number of additional criteria which can be used flexibly to help meet their business challenges. Enhanced recognition in the form of bronze, silver or gold awards are now available.
The ICE Partnership has experienced and accredited Investors in People practitioners who can work with your organisation to meet the requirements of the Standard.

Health and Well Being
We all now live in a stressful world and as organisations emerge leaner and perhaps meaner it is clear that some people will feel battered and bruised. However taking action to promote the health and wellbeing of employees is often seen as the type of thing that only large companies and public sector organisations do because it is viewed as unaffordable by smaller organisations.
However it does not need to be expensive. ICE has recognised that this is an area of support that can bring significant value to your organisation.
With our experts, we have developed a range of programmes that will manage the process of dealing with and encouraging well being at the workplace.
The business case for doing this is very strong. There is lots of evidence of reduced costs associated with absenteeism and labour turnover. Those organisations who promote health and wellbeing have also reported higher productivity, improved service and higher quality as outcomes.
Investors in People has recently launched a Health and Well Being standard; the ICE team can provide advice and guidance in order to secure the business benefits and also achieve recognition.
HR Support
The ICE team also includes experienced people who can help develop programmes or provide 1:1 support for improving absence management, recruitment (helping with interviews, recruitment strategies, meeting legislative requirements etc), disciplinary processes, reviews of Terms and Conditions and managing Industrial Relations.
